Local hardening of bearing surfaces by a laser beam - suitable for making a spiral oil recess in an IC engine cylinder liner

Selected zones (I) of the bearing surfaces of metal components are heat treated to alter the metallurgical properties of the zones (I), thus improving their wear-resistance. Zones (I) are pref. heat treated by a laser beam fed through a focussing tube so the beam impinges on selected zones of a component mounted on a turntable. Used e.g. to form oil recesses in a surface such as the bore of a cylinder liner for an IC engine.
