1509397 Dynamo-electric machines on vehicles C C RAO 19 July 1976 [29 Aug 1975] 35773/75 Heading H2A A vehicle carries a plurality of electrical generators and means for bringing a selected number of these into a position where they are driven so as to generate a supply. As shown the vehicle includes front wheels 2 and rear wheels 3, engine 4, gear-box 5, drive shaft 6 and differential 7. An electric generator system 14 comprising generators 50, Fig. 3, is; mounted so that depression of a pedal 18 brings the generators successively into engagement with a toothed wheel 18 on a front axle 13. A pawl and ratchet mechanism locks the pedal 18 in any desired position (Fig. 5, not shown). The output of the generators feeds, via rectifiers 57, a battery 10. Generators driven by the shaft 16 also feed the battery 10. The rear axles incorporate electric motors 9 which become energized from the battery 10 when a lever 17 moves to complete the circuit, this movement also disengaging dog-clutches 8 which couple the wheels to the differential 7. A pedal 20 which is a normal accelerator pedal under I..C engine drive, includes a contact which wipes across fixed contacts of a variable resistance to increase the applied voltage under electric drive conditions (Fig. 5, not shown). A third pedal 19 disconnects the electric drive on braking. A terminal 10A for externally charging the battery 10 is provided. In a modified arrangement (Fig. 7, not shown) the drive is solely electrical. |
