The finishing machine has a working area and a conveyor travelling at least part of the way along this area for magazines containing components to be finished. As the items are indexed, a transfer mechanism delivers them individually into the working area. The mechanism has two independently-driven transfer devices (20), the first of which receives (20) the foremost item in the transfer zone, while the second moves the next ones forward as the first one is being transferred. The second device can have mountings equal in number to the max. number of items in the transfer zone, and engaging with these items during the transfer operation.
