VERFAHREN ZUR HERSTELLUNG VON O-REGULAEREN PHENOLFORMALDEHYDOLIGOMEREN

Ortho-regular phenol-HCHO oligomers are prepd. by (a) reacting (i) comminuted crystalline phenol, or a mixt. contg. crystalline phenol and 14-58 wt. % crystalline naphthalene, with (ii) gaseous HCHO, at 20-40 (20-25) degrees C, to form phenol-alcohols as the prim. prod.; (b) condensing the phenol-alcohols, (c) drying, i.e. removing water of condensation and (d) heat-treating the oligomers prepd. The prods. are used as binders for moulding compns. subjected to high temps., pressures and ionising radiation. Phenol-alcohol prodn. step at crystal-gas interface takes place in an anhydrous medium, without added catalyst, at a low temp. The naphthalene can form a reactive donor-acceptor molecular complex with the phenol. The formation of tar-contg. gas waters is reduced to 7 wt. %. Energy consumption is reduced. Costs of end-prod. can be reduced by 10-13% and costs of plant by 30-50%.
