The tapered coupling section (1) of the mute fits directly into the bell of the French horn. It has a layer of cork to provide a good seal. A long expanded section (2) leads into a hyperbolic compression section (4,5). The latter has a distance (D) of 70 to 90 mm to the min. cross-section and a further 30 mm to the outlet. The throat dia. (B) is 8 mm, while the outlet dia. (A) is 30 mm. The outer line (3) of the funnel-shaped middle section (2) can be bowed inwards towards the centre axis. This arrangement prevents the mute increasing the pitch of the unstopped notes.
