Sewing machine attachment for folding material to form a seam comprises a cavity extending from an inlet opening at one end of the folder to an outlet opening at the other end. The cavity undergoes a gradual change in profile along its length, from rectilinear at the inlet opening to non-rectilinear at the outlet opening. Pref. at the outlet of the outlet opening is a rectilinear central portion, second and third adjacent rectilinear portions each adjoining the sides of the central portion, and fourth and fifth rectilinear portions each adjoining the second and third portions and located between the second and third portions on one side and the central portion on the other side.
