Cyclopentene is oligomerized by contact with a catalyst comprising (a) a transition metal compound and (b) an alkyl aluminium halide. The reaction may be carried out - 40‹ to +150‹ C. optionally in the presence of an inert solvent. Preferred catalyst components are (a) compounds of Zr, Co, Ni, Ta, Mo, W or Re; (b) EtAlCl 2 , Et 2 AlCl or the sesquichloride.
