1,209,210. Rocket with folding fins and braking flaps. WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON BUHRLE A.G. 26 Aug., 1968 [6 Sept., . 1967], No. 40794/68. Heading F3A. [Also in Division F1] Rocket comprising errectable braking flaps 30 normally held in a retracted position between a nozzle 3, 4 and folded fins 13. The fins have a straight thickened portion 13<SP>1</SP> and a curved portion 13 and are held in a retracted position by fusible wires extending into the nozzle. The braking flaps have a U-shaped cross-section, with a curved outer surface. An adjustable ring 46 is provided for predetermining the degree of erection of the braking flaps. On launching the rocket from a launching tube, the wires holding the fins are melted but the fins are retained in the retracted position by the wall of the tube. As the rocket emerges from the tube the fins are erected by a spring 19 and moved rearwardly to free the braking flaps. A displaceable sleeve 36 acted upon by a spring or by propellant gases diverted through a passage 54, brings the flaps into an erect position, determined by the engagement of a flange 36 with the adjustable ring 46. The erected flaps are locked by an element 49. In a modification (Fig. 5, not shown), the flaps are pivoted rearwardly of the fins 13 and are acted upon directly by the adjustable ring. |
