Smelter oxides, contng. high propns. of water-soluble salts and organic impurities, as obtd. in processing of copper and tin ores, are purified by suspending in water, washing the solid product, drying and milling. Washing is pref. carried out at =100 degrees C (esp. 60-80 degrees C), pref. using electrolyte free water. Spray-drying at 125-300 degrees C (esp. 160-180 degrees C) immediately after washing, is advantageous. Low quality zinc oxide can be used to produce a product with characteristic pigment props., suitable for use in paints, rubber, etc.
