Mineral wool is produced from slag esp. blast furnace slag by dispersion of particles of molten slag using pressurised gas jets by treating the slag directly without intermediate reheating at the end of the blast furnace casting channel, where it is enlarged into a storage basin with a pouring lip, by sweeping with jets of pressurised gas the stream of slag at the edge of the pouring lip, the fibres obtd. being guided into a forming chamber and recovered. Used as a replacement for asbestos esp. in cement compsns. as reinforcement, etc. The process does not involve the successive reheating steps of prior art generally used when high quality fibre of accurately reproducible size and length is desired.
|
