An article having a coating of a thermoset resin is produced by forming a mixture containing a polyfunctional polydiene prepolymer having at least 50% of its olefinic unsaturation in the form of pendant vinyl groups on alternate carbon atoms of an elongate backbone carbon chain, a polyfunctional organic chain extender capable of reacting with the functional groups on the polydiene, and a peroxide free radical initiator capable of heat-curing the mixture to a thermoset resin, reacting the mixture to form by chain extension an elastomer having unreacted initiator dispersed therethrough, comminuting the elastomer, heating the article and contacting the comminuted elastomer therewith to form a coating of the elastomer thereon, and heating the coating to cure the elastomer to a thermoset resin. The polyfunctional polydiene may be dihydroxy-1,2-polybutadiene or dihydroxy 3,4-polyisoprene and the polyfunctional chain extender a diisocyanate, diacid halide, dicarboxy, or diester substituted aliphatic or aromatic compound; or dicarboxy 1,2 polybutadiene or dicarboxy 3,4- polyisoprene, and a diepoxide, diamine, diimine, dihydroxy, or diaziridine substituted aliphatic or aromatic compound. The initial mixture may also contain a polyfunctional polyether or hydrocarbon copolymer; and a filler material comprising synthetic fibers or fabric, carbon, asbestos, silica, glass, silicate, metal, metal oxide, or plastics material. The coating may be applied using a fluidized bed, by rolling the object in a bed of powder, or by pouring or spraying the powder over the heated object. Articles specified are a pump impellor blade, and the internal surface of a metal pipe. |
