REACTIVE COAL TAR SYSTEM CONTAINING PHENOL REACTIVE COMPOUND

A reactive primer containing phenol-blocked isocyanate molecules and a compound capable of reacting with a phenol is applied to a metal substrate at ambient temperature. Subsequent application of a coal tar enamel at a temperature above 300 DEG F. causes the isocyanate groups to unblock releasing the phenol which then reacts with the phenol reactive compound. The unblocked isocyanate bonds the enamel to the substrate.
