1448079 Differential gear CLARK EQUIPMENT CO 20 March 1975 [20 March 1974] 11723/75 Heading F2D An axle driving bevel differential 72, driven directly, or, as shown, through a similar interaxle differential 18, is driven by a bevel pinion 48 and ring gear 82, the paths of rotation of which extend below the level 112 of lubricant in the sump 108 of the axle housing, and both differentials 72, 18 are lubricated by lubricant in a sealed reservoir 86, cast in the housing, located entirely above the sump level 112, and maintained filled by lubricant scraped off the ring gear and pinion 48, 82 by proximate fixed surfaces 124, 134 in the housing, gravityfeeding into the reservoir 86 through channels 126, 136, the reservoir gravity-feeding the differentials through cylindrical spaces 77, 97 between shafts 12L, 88 and surrounding members. A proximate scraper rib 40 returns lubricant from the interaxle differential 18 to the sump 108. In Fig. 2 an interaxle drive shaft 88 is driven differentially with the axle drive pinion 48 through the interaxle differential 18 by an aligned input shaft 32, and lies below the axle shafts 12L, 12R, the bevel drive 48, 82 being hypoid.
