A cutting assembly comprises cutters attached to an endless belt 22 so that the cutting plates 28 of the cutters 24 extend outwardly from the outer face of the belt and are inclined relative to the horizontal plane through the pitch line of the belt. Each cutter 24 is formed by bending a sheet metal blank and includes a body portion 26 which is attached to the belt and a cutting plate 28. The cutting plate 28 forms a slightly obtuse angle with the body portion 26 and is tilted relative to the horizontal plane 29. A forward surface 30 of the cutting plate is parallel with plane 29 and together with face 32 defines a swept back cutting edge 34. The surface 30 is sharpenable as it passes a sharpening member. The cutters 24 are secured to the belt 22 by rivets 42. In other embodiments the cutters are secured to the belt 22 by means of one rivet and a corner tang cut out and bent from the body portion 26 and embedded in the belt to enable it to flex naturally; or by a central rivet and keying tangs on the ends of the body portion; or by a central rivet and a thin rubber adhering layer vulcanised to the outer face of the belt and to a face on the body. Further embodiments include a cutting plate with a rounded anchor or tang embedded in a slot in the belt and preferably vulcanised to it. An anchoring pin also embedded in the belt is inserted in a hole in the anchor. |
