A process in which yarn is traversed onto a package is characterized in that as the package increases in diameter the length of yarn between the traversing element and the point where it contacts the package is maintained constant or increases at the most by one quarter of its initial value and decreases by at most one tenth of its initial value. In Fig. 2 the package I is driven by a drum 2 and the thread 3 is traversed by a slit drum of inner radius Rsi and outer radius Rsa. The centre Mw1 of the package 1 is caused to move along the hyperbola Ls if the aforesaid length of yarn indicated at Ls is to remain constant. The upper and lower hyperbolas indicate the latitude allowable for the path of movement of Mwl. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the radius Rt of the drum 2 equals the inner radius Rsi of the slit drum 4 and in this instance the path of movement of the centre Mw1 is along a straight line normal to the line joining Ms and Mt. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the slit drum 4 is replaced by a traversing thread guide (6) and the distance Ls is maintained constant, or within the aforesaid limits, by causing the centre Mw to move along a straight line (7) or along a curve (10) between straight lines (8, 9) one on each side of the line (7). |
