1410236 Ampicillin GALENIKA PHARMACEUTICAL & CHEMICAL INDUSTRY 11 Oct 1972 [17 April 1972] 46912/72 Heading C2C Ampicillin, especially ampicillin trihydrate, is prepared by treating a protected imino ether of benzylpenicillin of the formula wherein R 1 is an alkyl group and R 2 , which protects the carboxyl group, is a readily hydrolysable group such as the residue of an aliphatic or aromatic carboxylic or dicarboxylic acid, or of an aromatic sulphonic acid (e.g. propionic, acetic butyric, valeric, benzoic, succinic and p-toluenesulphonic acid residues); in two successive steps with (a) water and (b) phenylglycine chloride hydrochloride, the treatment (b) being carried out in the presence of an organic solvent.
