The pen or pencil has a cap protecting the nib or tip, the cap being coupled by a movement-reversing or-controlling mechanism to an actuator movable on the pen itself, so that it cannot be completely removed. The cap can be arranged to slide in the lengthwise and transverse directions under the action of this mechanism, orto slide lengthways and pivot on an axis parallel or perpendicular to that of the pen. There can be a hole in the pen to accommodate the cap in the writing position. The cap can be fully or partly flexible, compressible or foldable.
