The handbrake lever (11) is linked to the two brake linkages (13) to the rear wheels (14) by a yoke (15) to balance out the brake force. The yoke can be displaced by a second lever (17) so that only one wheel is braked. This is used when one wheel loses grip and vehicle cannot be moved out of soft ground. The driver merely sets the handbrake and then sets the selective lever to either side until the vehicle moves. For hydraulic parking brakes, the modulating lever operates a hydraulic valve to alter the distribution of braking force.
