Metal toys such as locomotives are given ageing appearance treatment prior to applying the final coat of paint by electrochemical processing in a corrosive soln., such as a pickling soln., a lye soln., or an acid soln. Pref. H3PO4, H2SO4, or HCl is used. Subsequently, the paint coat is sprayed on. The corrosion prod. obtd. resulting from the reaction between the metal and the corrosive soln. simulates the effect obtd. on locomotive components such as wheel, piston rods, boiler housing etc. when the locomotive has been in operation form some time.
