The brush manufacturing machine which is used to make brushes whose bristles are mounted as an annular tuft between a brush ring (3) and an insert (1) located therein includes a divider (19) which is moved down from above into the tuft (52) to spread out the bristles into two halves. The tuft is set coaxially opposite a longitudinally displaceable guide pipe (11) and at a slight distance from the annular stop (27) which encloses the pipe (11). A counter holder (20) which supports the bottom of the bristle tuft interacts with the divider and when the guide pipe (1) is moved into the splayed out bristle tuft the insert (1) can be pushed in through the pipe by means of a ram (15) so that the bristles clearly protrude along their ends on the side of the roots. The pipe (11) is then retracted and the stop (27) is pushed a certain amount onto the brush ring (3) so as to compress the bristle tuft. To complete the process the stop (27) and ram (15) are moved back.
