<p>1508620 End fitting for jacketed cables BETHLEHEM STEEL CORP 3 April 1975 [3 April 1974] 13679/75 Heading DIT [Also in Division F1] A compression type end fitting for jacketed cables of the kind in which a corrosion inhibiting fluid is passed slowly through the strand comprises:-(A) a central body portion 11, Fig. 2A, adapted to be compressed about the end of the cable 61 as in Fig. 7; (B) a sleeve 13 surrounding the central body 11 and spaced from it along contiguous portions; the sleeve at one of its ends extending beyond one end of the body portion 11 so as to define a chamber 60 above the body portion 11; and at its other end abutting the body portion 11 as at 29; (C) a gland 43 in the sleeve 13 above the chamber 60, the gland 43 serving to effect a sealing relationship with the surface 65 of the jacket of the cable as in Fig. 7; and (D) a passage 39 in the body portion 11 that links the space between the sleeve 13 and the central body portion 11 with an outlet opening 35 in the central body portion 11 where it projects out of the sleeve. In operation corrosion inhibiting fluid contained in the cable by its jacket passes along the central strand until it reaches some orifices 67 in the jacket, these orifices opening out into the chamber 60. The central body portion 11 has some flats 20 or the like on its outer surface that permit fluid to pass from the chamber 60 downwardly into the space between the sleeve 13 and the body 11. The fluid then escapes via the passages 39 and 35. Fig. 7 shows a pressure relief valve 81 screwed onto the lower end of the body 11, the pressure relief valve 81 having a threaded portion 95 to accept some further well apparatus such as a shear release fitting or the pony rod or pump rod of an oil well pump, not shown.</p> |
