1508464 Hydrometallurgical treatment of ferronickel SOC IMETAL 7 July 1975 [10 July 1974] 28596/75 Heading C1A Cobalt and nickel are extracted from ferronickel containing cobalt by: (a) treating ferronickel with chlorine in an aqueous medium to convert the metals to their chlorides, in aqueous solution; (b) filtering off from the solution the precipitated impurities; (c) oxidizing said filtrate to convert ferrous choloride to ferric chloride without precipitation of ferric ions; (d) contacting the oxidized aqueous solution obtained as filtrate from step (c) with a solution (i) of tributyl phosphate in a water-immiscible organic solvent to selectively extract, by a liquid/liquid exchange process, the ferric chloride into the organic phase whilst the nickel and cobalt are retained in the aqueous phase; separating the aaqueous and organic phases and contacting the organic phase with water or acidified water (ii) to remove therefrom the ferric chloride, which is recovered as an aqueous solution; (e) treating the aqueous phase from step (d), which contains the cobalt and nickel chloride and optionally other metal chlorides, with a basic tertiary amine in a water-immiscible organic solvent (iii) to selectively extract the cobalt chloride, by a liquid/liquid exchange process, into the organic phase whilst the nickel is retained in the aqueous phase; separating the aqueous and organic phases and contacting the organic phase with water or acidified water (iv) to dissolve therefrom the cobalt chloride which is recovered as an aqueous solution, and (f) recovering the aqueous phase from step (e) as an aqueous solution containing nickel chloride and optionally other remaining metal chlorides.
|
