1508863 Pile fabrics E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 26 June 1975 [28 June 1974] 27135/75 Heading DIK [Also in Division B5] The backside of a primary sheet, which is a pile fabric the face side of which is sensitive to distortion by pressure or friction and the mating side of a secondary sheet are bonded together by applying an adhesive to either or both of the back side of the primary sheet and the mating side of the secondary sheet, contacting the mating side of the secondary sheet with the back side of the primary sheet, pressing the primary and secondary sheets firmly together by maintaining the primary and secondary sheets taut and, without coating the back side of the secondary sheet, applying pressure thereto to prevent distortion of the face side of the primary sheet, avoiding the application of any pressure to the face side of the primary sheet until at least 50% of the terminal bond strength of the adhesive has developed and setting the adhesive. The primary sheet may be a shag carpet, flocked cloth or paper or fake fur textile. The adhesive may be a hot melt adhesive, a latex or organic solvent-based adhesive and pressure may be applied to the back side of the secondary sheet by a curved surface, roll or platen. The pressure means may have holes in its surface, preferably in raised pressure points on its surface. In Fig. 1, tufted, dyed and dried unbacked carpet 1 passes over guide rolls 2 and 3 which provide a taut carpet for treatment by back-beaters 4, and is coated with adhesive by applicator 5 prior to being bonded to scrim at roll 7. The weakly bonded carpet 8 is then passed over continuously curved supporting surface 9 which may be heated or cooled depending upon the nature of the adhesive, the action of tenter frame 11 and pull roll 13 causing a downward force to result on the carpet forcing the primary scrim and secondary scrim tightly together. Equipment 12 may be a heated oven for waterbased or solvent-based adhesives or a coolout box when hot-melt adhesives are used. The carpet primary scrim may be of jute, woven polypropylene fibres or needle-punched nylon. |
