摘要 1508849 Combined electrolysis and radiolysis BEESTON CO Ltd 30 June 1975 [3 July 1974 25 Nov 1974] 27570/75 Heading C7B In the electrolytic production of hydrogen and oxygen the aqueous electrolyte is irradiated with electromagnetic radiation of wavelength not greater than 10<SP>-10</SP> m i.e. x-rays or gamma-rays, such as produced from an electrical supply means which applies between the anode 12 and cathode 13 of the electrolytic cell 11 pulses of electrical energy at a frequency of greater than 5000 pulses/second and a voltage of at least 10000 volts, and a magnetic field is applied to the electrolyte in field direction extending between the anode and cathode (serving as conductors of magnetic flux such that magnetic field lines extending therefrom intersect). As shown a source of D.C. energy of uniform voltage (e.g. 12 volts) applied at terminals 14, 15 is converted into the high voltage pulses by means comprising a first transformer TR1 having primary coils 34-36 energized by the D.C. source and an inductively coupled secondary coil 32 to which is connected a dump capacitor C5, oscillator means e.g. transistors Q3, Q4 to produce the pulses, a switching device e.g. thyristor T1 which responds to each pulse to discharge the dump capacitor and short circuit the first transformer, and a second transformer TR2 comprising a primary coil 48 to receive the pulses discharged and an inductively coupled secondary coil 49 connected to the anode 12 and cathode 13 of the radiation generator 11. Preferably the electrodes are hollow concentric cylinders e.g. of Pt plated Ni, the inner anode 12 provided with outer flutes and the outer cathode 13 segmented into corresponding radially aligned strips having a total active surface area equal to that of the flutes.
