<p>1509136 Conveying and cutting sheet material MASCHINENBAU OPPENWEILER GmbH 25 March 1976 [4 April 1975] 12131/76 Heading B8R [Also in Division B4] An apparatus for conveying and cutting a pile of sheets, e.g. a signature, comprises a conveyer means 19 for feeding the sheets and including a rotatably mounted wheel like member 21a having a circumferential surface 32 for co-operation with an endless belt 23a so as to clamp and convey the sheets past a cutting device including a cutting disc knife 29. The signature 13 is fed on to a saddle support 11 provided with a slot 15 through which a comb 16 may be moved by a lifting mechanism 17 in order to move the signature into engagement with the conveying device 19; the comb fingers 16a-16d are adjustably mounted on a bar 55 in order to suit different widths of signature and the lifting device is raised and lowered by a cam disc 82 via a lever 77, 78. The conveying device includes four wheels 21a, 21b, 22a, 22b arranged to co-operate with respective endless belts 23a, 23b, 24a, 24b. The wheels 21a, 21b, are axially-slidable on a splined shaft 33 whereas the wheels 22a, 22b are fixed thereto and the belts are axially adjustable in order that signatures of different widths may be trimmed, The edges of the wheels are provided with cutting inserts 89 for co-operation with cutting discs 29a, 29b, 31a, 31b mounted on a splined shaft 38, the discs being axially adjustable in a similar manner to the conveying wheels. The conveying wheels also include clamping jaws 42a which are actuated through a series of levers 92, 95, 97 and cam discs 101. The clamping jaws serve to grip the signature and transfer it into the bight between the belts and wheels thereby holding the signature during the trimming operation; the jaws are arranged to descend below the surface of the wheel prior to its engagement with the belts. Stop means 43b, Fig. 5 are adapted to engage with the back edge of the signature and are also arranged to be moved below the surface of the wheels by a series of cam-actuated levers. In a modification, the cutting inserts 89 in the clamping wheels may be dispersed with and the surface of the wheels covered by a layer of e.g.: plastics material (130) Fig. 11 (not shown) into which the cutting edges of the discs 29, 31 penetrate during cutting.</p> |
