Prepn. of ethylene glycol by reacting HCHO, CO and H2 in presence of a catalytic amt. of a catalyst contg. Rh (cpd), at 100-200 degrees C at a press. 68.9-689.5 bars above atmos. press. The reaction is pref. effected in an alcohol as solvent using a catalyst also contg. a Co carbonyl e.g. CO2(CO)8, wt. ratio of Co carbonyl to Rh being 1:10 to 10:1. the Rh is pref. in 0.1-5% wt. concn. in the reaction mixt. Used as organic solvent, refrigerant or non-volative anti-freeze. The present process may be conducted under milder conditions than prior processes e.g. press. 1380 bars at 220 degrees C was used.
