Process comprises (1) treating the raw material with a 0.1-1.2 N caustic alkali (pref. NaOH) soln. contg. a swelling inhibitor, to give optimum degradation of the starting material, and (2) eliminating the alkali by washing with water, (3) neutralising to pH 5-8 with an acid and (4) sepg. the glue or gelatine by melting with hot water. The swelling inhibitor may be e.g. Na2SO4, K2SO4, (NH)2SO4, MgSO4, NaCl, KCl, NH4Cl and/or MgCl2. Process gives optimum degradation of the raw material and is faster tnan processes using milk of lime as the degrading agent. This reduces the number of vats necessary for a given output and thus can be operated with a smaller floor space than standard processes.
