A programming device for an automatic washing machine includes a drive motor driving an inversion cam and a series of programme cams acting on a electromagnetic contact which supplies current to the drive motor, and which can be temporarily shunted by a static contact. The static contact is actuated by an electronic timing device including an oscillator and a frequency divider allowing the base frequency of the oscillator to be divided into four different binary signals which are fed to two inputs. The binar state of the two inputs are controlled by four different positions of the electromagnetic contact depending on the position of four cam surfaces on the associated cam. A wide variety of programmes can be executed by the washing machine.
