The oxygen is produced by low temperature fractionating of air. This oxygen is supplied at ambient temperature to the inlet of a nozzle compressor operated with high pressure steam. The low temperature fractionating is carried out in two pressure stages. The oxygen is drawn in liquid state from the low pressure stage. It is evaporated with a proportion of the air to be separated. This air is compressed to a higher pressure than the main quantity of air to be separated. The mixing arrangement is highly reliable in operation and no oxygen compressor is used.
