N-chloro-thio-phthalimide prodn. from di:thio-bis-phthalimide - by chlorinating in presence of light or radical precursors, intermediate for rubber auxiliaries

The parent patent describes the prodn. of N-chlorothiophthalimide (I) by reacting N,N'-dithio-bis-phthalimide (II) with Cl2 or a chlorinating agent at 20-100 degrees C. In this addition the process is carried out in the presence of radical precursors and/or of light. Improved space-time yields, are obtd. In an example, a 98% yield of (I) was obtd. by irradiating a mixt. of 215 g (II), 1.2 l chlorobenzene and 43 g Cl2 with a UV lamp.
