Closed die forging press - having inertial nut screw mechanism for clamping dies during forming

A closed forming press incorporates a two-part die one part being secured to the press frame while the other is mounted on a slide moving in guides on the frame. During forming the dies are clamped together by a nut-end-screw combination one member is secured to the slide and moves linearly with consequent rotational motion of the other member. Mounted on the second member are two discs initially adjoining each other. The first disc is connected to the member while the second disc is connected to the latter by a self-locking thread so that the inertia forces resulting from the closing of the dies results in helical motion of the second disc relative to the first disc. The die parts are clamped by engagement of the second disc with the frame. A drive means subsequently returns the second disc with the frame. A drive means subsequently returnes the second disc to its initial position. The appts. provides improved press efficiency and reduced power consumption. It is used for shaping crown gear blanks, tees, crosses and bushings.
