The large container locking mechanism is particularly for refuse collector bins with hinged covers. In the edge (1) of the cover a bell-crank lever (10) pivots on an axis (9), having a handle (11) extending outwards, and a downwards-extending arm with a hook (12) at the bottom end, engaging with a mating hooked portion (15) on the edge of the bin (3) when locked. A leaf spring (18) is fixed to the lever and bears against the cover edge, holding the lever in the engaged position. A curved portion (22) of the spring forms a recess, engaging with a protrusion (20) on the cover edge to hold the lever in the free position when released.
