The carpet cleaner is for the simultaneous brushing and vacuum cleaning of carpeted floors. A low housing movable on the carpet floor being cleaned contains an electric motor which drives a brush roller positioned transverse to the direction of movement inside a front chamber of the housing and placed on to the surface to be cleaned. The dirt pick-up container (42) is made as a two-part closable box which is sub-divided into two chambers by a filter intermediate wall consisting of light permeable material. The suction blower (38) is connected on the vacuum side to one of the chambers and the housing chamber holding the brush roller (30) is connected to the other chamber of the dirt pick-up container.
