A toy swimming fish has a hollow body (1) of waterproof plastic with a metal central fin (7) to provide lateral stability. The tail (2) is made in two sections (3, 4) and is joined to the body (1) by a hinge pin (5). The section (3) of the tail is made of very light foam rubber mounted on a metal frame (12). An electric motor inside the hollow body (1) drives a crank (9) with a pin which engages the slot (10) of a connecting rod (11) attached to the frame (12). The electric motor works from 1.5 to 4.5 V battery and rotates at 2 to 4 revolutions per second. This imparts a life-like oscillating motion to the tail and drives the fish forwards.
