The covering comprises a link belt (12) which is made up of a number of carrying links (14) which stretch across the assembly pit (1) and the ends of which are fastened on endless chains (16). The latter are each in driven engagement with a chain wheel (24) and can be moved by means of an electric motor (28) which can be driven in opposite directions. The carrying links (14) slide on horizontal guide rails which are arranged on the longitudinal edges of the pit and support the link belt such that it can be loaded. In the open state of the assembly pit, the link belt is located beneath a floor grate (3) or, itself, forms the pit floor upon which it is possible to walk. In this manner, the pit covering can be closed simply and rapidly without the carrying links (14) having to be moved by hand. <IMAGE>
