The fixture for holding pipes to be machined on outside surface has mandrel inserted in the bore of the pipe. The pipes are rotated on machining. The mandrel rotates with pipe and ensures radial support. Thin walled pipes are turned or ground to ensure uniform wall thickness preferably over a relatively short length of pipe mid-length. The mandrel (10) drives the tube (17) in conjunction with a clamping ring (18). Plungers (22, 23) push the tube against the support mandrel (10) on both sides of the cutter in the machining area (19). The mandrel is a solid round bar whose ends are held firmly against radial displacement. The mandrel supports pipes on machining with very small bending ensuring good concentricity.
