Filter cleaning appts. for removing sludge and gelatinous material from rotatable filter elements comprises a curved support arm carrying a flexible brush which engages the surfaces of a filter element. The support arm is mounted in a stationary position at an angle relative to the radii extending from the central axis of the filter element. As the filter element is rotated the flexible brush frictionally removes filtered solids from the surface of the elements. The disposition of the support arm and its curved shape provides for rapid removal of filtered solids from the surface of the filter element without any damaging forces being exerted on the sensitive mesh screen of the element due to pile up of solids.
