A double-ended, reversible, blade type parting-off cutter 13 for use with a tool holder 10 having a blade receiving pocket comprises a thin flat body with top and bottom edges 30, 40 respectively having parallel portions at their extremities, end edges 31, 32 disposed at substantially equal acute angles with respect to the top edge whereby the blade decreases in width from the top to the bottom edge, cutting edges 35a being defined by the intersection between the top edge 30 and the end edges 31, 32, and which extend transversely to the blade body and means for mounting the blade in the holder being located midway between the cutting edges and at a position that is in closer proximity to the lower edge than the top edge. The cutter blade may be provided with carbide inserts 35 incorporated at the cutting corners or alternatively the blade may be formed in one piece with slightly enlarged regions at the cutting corners on which cutting edges 52 are formed. The means for mounting the blade is constituted by elongate apertures 36, 37, 38 located in its lower region and which, by way of screws 14, it is secured in the holder. Further clamping means 12, 18 is provided to act on the top surface of the blade to ensure rigidity thereof in the holder when in use. In an alternative embodiment a portion 90 extending from the upper surface of the blade is provided and incorporates an aperture 94 for securing in a similar manner to the screws 14. Instead of the plurality of apertures at the lower region of the blade a single elongate hole may be provided, and magnetic means may be used instead of the clamping screws. |
