The valve needle upwards movement is retarded by means of a weight in order to limit the fuel volume injected. The weight (27) is located in an additional chamber (28) in the injector housing (10). A push rod (29) is fitted between the weight and the needle valve stop plate and surrounded by a return spring. The needle valve causes the weight to be displaced on the lift stroke by acting on the push rod. The return spring returns the needle valve to its seat (19) independently to the weight. The weight is returned by its on spring (30) to restore contact with the push rod. A piston could be employed instead of the weight to act as a shock absorber. A restricted passage leading to a drainage is provided above the piston.
