Free-flowing granular materials having a low bulk density are prepared. These are obtained by expanding a mixture, which contains a salt with its water of crystallisation and also contains a stabiliser, by evaporating water of crystallisation, the foam thus produced being stabilised by the stabiliser and being dried. An appliance for preparing the free-flowing granular materials is described. The free-flowing granular material can be used for the production of detergents.
