<p>A self-cleaning sand bath for chinchilla cages, comprises a hollow drum (B) mounted in an opening in a cage (J). It is rotatable about a horizontal axis for cleaning the sand, the drum (B) having a longitudinal opening (C), to one edge of which is connected a plate having unperforated and perforated parts (D, E) dividing the drum (B) into two spaces. The drum (B) may be rotated by the hand crank (I) acting on a toothed wheel (F) or by a motor. The drum is rotated from a position in which the opening (C) is within the cage for access by the chinchilla into the larger space, to a position in which the opening (C) is outside the cage. In the latter position, the sand is sieved through the part (E) and retained by the part (D) while droppings fall out of the opening (C). The device may instead be used for supplying food to the animals.</p> |
