The spreader-vehicle (5) may be deployed to distribute e.g. bitumen binder or fertiliser over superficial areas, and now has a variable rate of spread which is a direct function of the speed that the vehicle travels. A specified rate of spread can thus be achieved irrespective of the speed of vehicle travel. A slave system is deployed, is suitable for the spreading of liquid or granulated material, and relates the rate of spread to the rotation of the vehicles propulsive power unit. Solids may be fed to the distribution outlet by an archimedean screw, and the rate of screw rotation be related to that of the power unit. The material may be dropped from the outlet onto a rotating dispersal plate. The rate of rotation of the plate may be varied to control the 'speed' width. A single tank may house liquid or solid material, and liquids may be spread by a separate nozzle system.
