Lubricating greases comprise (a) a major amt. of a paraffinic and/or naphthenic mineral base oil and/or a synthetic oil, (b) 7-17 (pref. 7-13, esp. 8-12) wt% of a Ca complex soap, and (c) =5 wt.% in total of one or more conventional oxidn. inhibitors. Component (b) is derived from (i) a Ca base, (ii) a 1-3C aliphatic carboxylic acid and (iii) tallow, tallow fatty acids, stearic acid and/or hydrogenated fish oil acids. The (iii):(ii) wt ratio is >1:1 (pref. 1.5-2.0:1). The greases are defined as having a dropping point of >=170 degrees C (pref. >300 degrees C) and as meeting the requirements of DIN 51806 (SKF R2F test B) at >=140 degrees C. The greases are produced from inexpensive materials but are still suitable for use as universal greases. Their tendency to harden at high temps. is comparable with that of Li hydroxysterate greases.
|
