Appts. for cutting a strand into billets comprises a cutting table, with a guide rod above the rear end and a torch arm and feeler arm extending down from the guide rod. The arms are supported independently of each other and their ends may be swung transversely of the table. A cutting torch is directed downwards from the torch arm and the feeler arm extends below the torch to engage one side of the strand on the table. The torch arm is rotatable on the guide rod towards the feeler arm. The feeler arm may reverse the rotation of the torch arm and position the torch end over the upper edge of the side of a strand that the feeler arm is engaging forward of the guide rod is a stop which may be connected with the arms-supporting mechanism and a cam is used to swing the torch arm across the strand to cut it to form the billet. Used for automatically and continuously cutting cast metal strand into billets. The appts. can be adjusted to always start the cutting operation at the right point on the strand and make a straight cut across it. The feeler arm always positions the torch correctly and then moves away from it.
