1506888 Collapsible steering wheels INDUSTRIA NAPOLETANA CONSTRUZIONE AUTOVEICOLI ALFA ROMEO ALFASUD SpA 22 Aug 1975 [4 Sept 1974] 35052/75 Headings B7H and B7J A vehicle steering wheel comprises a rim 10 connected by yieldable spokes 11 to a yieldable central structure 12 which is fixable at 13 to a steering column 14, and a rigid cover 17 superimposed on the structure 12 to the periphery 15 of which it is fixed at 16, the cover 17 being located between the central structure 12 and the plane of the rim 10. In an impact, the driver's body first strikes the rim 10 as at F, causing flexure of the structure 12 to bring the rim towards the vertical until the driver's body contacts substantially the whole of the rim. Energy absorption then proceeds by deformation of the spokes 11 and of a further yieldable structure 18 which is superimposed on the cover 17 and has either steps (as shown), corrugations or holes formed therein to facilitate its collapse. The spokes may also be corrugated and need not be, as shown, formed integrally with the central structure. |
