1507124 Boring earth &c EMPIRE OIL TOOL CO 6 April 1976 [7 April 1975] 13828/76 Heading E1F [Also in Division F2] Apparatus for connecting motors in tandem in a drill string for deep oil well boring comprises a shaft coupling 10 and a motor outer housing coupling 38, the latter being formed of a tubular member 40 screw threaded at one end into one of the outer housings 34, 36 and fixed as by plug welds 42 into the other housing, a lock ring 56 being provided which connects at 54 to the outer housing 36 and which is keyed to the outer housing 34 by a key 48 secured as by screws 50 and extending into a keyway 58 in the lock ring and a keyway 46 in the outer housing. The shaft coupling 10 may be a sleeve movable axially along keys 20 and pressed by a spring 30. The motors 2 and 4 are driven by drilling mud and have inner housings 70 spaced from their outer housings by lugs 64. 68 to provide a passageway. To assemble the motor 2 on top of the motor 4, the coupling 10 is moved against the spring 30, the tubular member 40 is welded to the housing 34 and screwed into the tapered screw thread, the lock ring 56 is placed on so that welded-on keys 54 engage in recesses 52 in the housing 36, the housing 34 is turned further to line up the keyways 46, 58 and keys 48 are secured by the screws 50. |
