1507288 Laminated plastics card FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 12 July 1976 [11 July 1975 18 July 1975] 28926/76 Heading B5N A laminated plastics card, e.g. a credit card, membership card, identification card or bank account card, is produced by interposing at least one thermoplastics sheet between a pair of thermoplastics cover sheets, at least one of the pair of cover sheets being transparent, inserting an identification member carrying identification information and having smaller surface dimensions than the sheets and smaller thickness than the total thickness of the sheets between the transparent cover sheet, or one of the transparent cover sheets, and the interposed sheet to form an assembly, sandwiching the assembly of the sheets and the member between two electrodes of a high-frequency induction heating device, exerting a pressure uniformly on the assembly and member via the electrodes and applying a high-frequency wave to the electrodes to heat the sheets and member from inside so that the member is buried in the sheet interposed between the cover sheets and the total thickness of the sheets is smaller than the thicknesss thereof before being subjected to the pressure and high-frequency wave. The thermoplastics sheet between the cover sheets may be opaque and made of a material which is more easily softened by high-frequency induction heating than the material of the cover sheets. The identification member may be a photograph preferably having a rough surface. At least one of the cover sheets may be provided with printed information on its inside surafce. Three thermoplastics sheets may be interposed between a pair of thermoplastics cover sheets, the central sheet of the three sheets being made of a material more easily softened by high-frequency induction heating than the material of which the other two of the three sheets are made, the outer surface of at least one of the other two sheets optionally being provided with printed information. A magnetic recording tape may also be incorporated into the plastics card in addition to the identification member. The thermoplastics sheets may be of polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, acrylic resin, polyurethane, polycarbonate, nylon, ethylene/ vinyl acetate copolymer, a polyvinyl chloride/ polyvinyl acetate blend or cellulose acetate. The transparent sheets may have a thickness of 50-300 microns and the opaque sheet, which may contain a white pigment, may have a thickness of 100-500 microns. One electrode may be provided with a cooling device. |
