Title cpds. of formula I-CH2-SO2-NR-R1 (I) (where R is CH3 or H and R1 is 2-hydroxyethyl, 2-(2-hydroxethoxy)-ethyl, 2,3-dihydroxypropyl or alpha, gamma-dihydroxyisopropyl) are radiopaque substances particularly of use in X-ray contrast agents for visualising fluid cavities (esp. in radiculography, myelography, myeloencephalography and ventriculography) which have the advantages of being non-ionogenic and very readily water-soluble and of having low osmotic pressure. (I) are prepd. by reacting a cpd. I-CH2SO2X with a cpd. Y-R11 and removing any possible OH-protecting gps. from the product (where one of X and Y is Cl, Br, I, alkylsulphonyloxy or arylsulphonyloxy and the other is -NH-R, and R11 is a gp. corresponding to R1 in which OH gps. are opt. masked by protecting gps. readily removable by careful hydrolysis or hydrogenolysis). |
