<p>1299587 Spreading implements DEFCO Inc 4 Nov 1970 [19 Nov 1969] 52459/70 Heading AID [Also in Divisions El F2 and B2] A mobile applicator for dispensing liquids comprises a tank 153 for a liquid to be dispensed in air compressor 147 for maintaining a predetermined pressure in the tank, nozzle means 155 for spraying liquids released from the tank and a centrifugal governor operated diaphragm valve 20 actuated by movement of the applicator for controlling the volume of liquid sprayed so that it is proportional to the applicator speed and a constant volume per unit area is delivered. The control unit is driven through a flexible shaft 142 from a wheel 144 in frictional engagement with the applicator wheel 152. The control unit Fig. 5 comprises a centrifugal governor having weights 93 pivotally mounted on a spider 90 which in turn is mounted on a shaft 87. A cone 88 is mounted on shaft 87 and is driven from flexible drive 142 by a wheel 124. As the speed of the applicator increases the weights tend to rise and lift a cam plate follower 95 which, by means of a thrust plate 97, lifts a spindle 40 to open a valve 39 from its seat 36 which allows more of the spraying medium to pass from the inlet 77 to the outlet 78. Two diaphragms 41, 42 are provided in the control unit the former being exactly equal in area to the valve 39 and acting to balance the pressure acting on the valve 39 which tends to close it by receiving an equal force in the opposite direction. This allows the diaphragm 42 to balance the force provided by the rotating weights of the governor. The position of the wheel 124 relative to the core 88 can be adjusted according to a setting dial 128 so that a predetermined volume of spray per unit area can be selected. If the applicator moves so quickly that the control unit governor is at its maximum then the weights 93 contact the striker 101 of warning bell 100.</p> |
