An arrangement for obtaining an electrical contact between an electrical heating element inside a furnace and a current supply bar outside the furnace consists of electrode mounted in the furnace wall and comprising a number of electrical connecting elements which connect it to the bus-bar. An internal conducting surface of the electrode acts as the conducting contact face with the heating elements, a bore passes radially (relative to the furnace) through the electrode and houses, as a loose fit, a bolt locked at its inner end into the heating element inside the furnace and equipped at its outer end with an adjustable spring loading assembly which applies an adjustable stress to the bolt so that the heating element is always pulled tightly against the contact surface on the inner face of the electrode. Used in particular for furnaces used for the prodn. of coated particle nuclear fuel, where the fissile material is coated with a pyrolytic carbon or metallic carbide. Such furnaces are subjected to appreciable temp. cycling and operate for long periods, with the result that there is a tendency for the electrical contacts to become loosened. The adjustable pre-stressing action applicable by the spring-loaded device to the bolts retaining the heating elements enables a permanent contact to be maintained at the face for very long periods without the need for access to the interior of the furnace.
|
